What’s Paatal Lok season 2 all about?
Life hasn’t changed much for Hathiram Chaudhary (Jaideep Ahlawat). He still holds the same position at the Jamnapaar Police Thana. However, after the events of the last season, he now understands his worth, allowing him to trust his instincts with greater conviction and confidence. Meanwhile, Imran Ansari (Ishwak Singh), who trained under Hathiram in the first season, has risen to the rank of ACP and become his senior. This doesn’t faze Hathiram, who continues to perform his duties to the best of his abilities.
Both officers are working on their respective cases when they realize that their investigations are interconnected, revolving around the murder of Mr. Jonathan Thom, a prominent figure in the Naga community, just before the Nagaland Business Summit. Paatal Lok 2 follows their journey from Delhi to Dimapur, unraveling the mystery one knot at a time.

Hathi Ram’s character undergoes a significant transformation, conveyed through Jaideep’s subtle performance and nuanced portrayal. In the first season, Hathi Ram’s primary goal was to make his son proud and change his perception of him as a failure. After solving the Sanjeev Mehra case in Season 1, despite not receiving any recognition or acknowledgment for his bravery, he found contentment in discovering his own potential.
Jaideep’s effortless portrayal of Hathi Ram beautifully showcases this change in demeanor and mindset, making you root for him. There’s a poignant scene where Hathi Ram solves a crucial lead, but his senior officers receive the credit and media attention while he watches from a corner. As he eats biscuits and offers one to a police dog, he’s told, “Inko yeh allowed nahin hai” (They’re not allowed to have this). This moment subtly conveys that even the dog’s situation is better than Hathi Ram’s.
There are many such moments with underlying messages, highlighting that although Hathi Ram is still not getting his due, he no longer cares because he knows his own worth.
Ishwak Singh shines as the dynamic and dashing young ACP. He is absolutely amazing in scenes where he is torn between being someone who trained under Hathi Ram’s mentorship and now having to give him orders.
Tillotama Shome excels as the tough cop Meghna Barua, tasked with overseeing Ansari and Chaudhary as they investigate the case in Nagaland. She nails the accent, once again demonstrating her ability to seamlessly embody her characters. Nagesh Kukunoor is well-cast as a bureaucrat and prominent figure in Nagaland.
Paatal Lok 2 leaves no room for second screen viewing. The story keeps you engrossed throughout, and the performances keep you engaged. As a crime thriller, it offers plenty of moments that will leave you shocked, appalled, and even with a lump in your throat, as it reflects the varied layers of the society we live in. The dialogues are witty, and the sarcasm perfectly captures the puffed-up attitudes typical of Delhi and Haryana.
