Celebrities on the Red Carpet at the British Fashion Awards 1989 to 2023 [PHOTOS]

The 2024 Fashion Awards will take place Monday night at Royal Albert Hall, with a long list of celebrities and designers set to attend. John Galliano, Jonathan Anderson and Miuccia Prada are among six designers competing for the Designer of the Year category, while famous faces including Tom Ford, A$AP Rocky, and Issa Rae will all be celebrated as well.

Founded in 1989, the British Fashion Council’s annual fundraising gala has long generated stylish red carpet moments.

WWD looks back on the celebrity style throughout the years, from Princess Diana‘s stunning white Catherine Walker look worn at the first Fashion Awards, to Rihanna’s seafoam green Fenty minidress from 2019, to the vintage Valentino dress that Anne Hathaway wore to last year’s event.

Princess Diana, 1989

Princess Diana arrived at the first British Fashion Awards wearing a white embroidered Catherine Walker look, which was later dubbed the “Elvis Dress.”

Kate Moss and Vivienne Westwood, 2009

Kate Moss, posing with Vivienne Westwood, wore a black Christian Dior by John Galliano gown to the event where she won the London 25 Award. That night, Moss also accepted John Galliano’s Outstanding Achievement of the Year Award on behalf of the designer who was unable to attend.

Harry Styles, 2013

Harry Styles played it cool and kept it casual to accept the British Style Award, accessorizing his all-black Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane suits with a scarf saucily tossed over one shoulder.

Lady Gaga and Lucky Blue Smith, 2015

While Lady Gaga and Lucky Blue Smith might have been an unexpected pair, they made a style statement at the 2015 awards show. A then 17-year-old was Smith presenting Tom Ford with the Red Carpet Designer of the Year Award, accepted by Lady Gaga on the designer’s behalf. 

Naomi Campbell, 2016

Naomi Campbell looked elegant wearing a sheer black Brandon Maxwell gown featuring intricate beading.

Meghan Markle, 2018

In 2018, Meghan Markle made a surprise appearance at the awards in London to honor Clare Waight Keller, Givenchy’s former creative director who designed Markle’s wedding dress. Waight Keller took home the British Womenswear Designer of the Year award.

To accept the Urban Luxe award for her brand Fenty, Rihanna made an appearance at The British Fashion Awards with her beau A$AP Rocky in 2019. This year, A$AP Rocky will be honored as a Cultural Innovator for his resounding impact on the creative industries and popular culture.

Dua Lipa, 2021

Dua Lipa was elegant wearing a black Maximilian gown to the event, which was re-branded as the Fashion Awards in 2020, to reflect the international reach of the event.

Sabrina Carpenter, 2022

Sabrina Carpenter looked chic wearing a light brown backless jersey dress with a draped hood and knot detail by Alberta Ferretti. 

Anne Hathaway, 2023

Anne Hathaway was elegant wearing a vintage Valentino dress from the Italian house’s fall 1993 collection. She attended the event on the arm of Giancarlo Giammetti, who accepted the Outstanding Achievement Award on behalf of his longtime business partner Valentino Garavani.

Taylor Russell, 2023

Taylor Russell wore Loewe to the 2023 event. Her silk satin gown, which was embellished with metallic hardware, put a new spin on old Hollywood glamour.
