After three consecutive losses in the ‘The Game’, the No. 2 The Buckeyes (10-1, 7-1 Big Ten) are desperate to reclaim momentum in the bitter rivalry. All three losses to Michigan cost the Buckeyes a shot at the Big 10 championship those three painful years. Devastating outcomes for head coach Ryan Day that have not been forgotten.
Each team has proved time and time again that they are capable of taking down the other, regardless of rank or stature. It just means more during that final game in November.
The Buckeyes’ only loss this season remains a one-point heartbreaker to now top-ranked Oregon at Autzen Stadium. They have played three top five teams.
The offense is churning out 37.8 points per game and is 28th in the nation in total offense, tallying 439.1 yards per contest. Under a balanced attack with new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, Ohio State ranks in the top-50 in both the pass and the run.
Ohio State is guided by senior quarterback Will Howard, who has thrown for 2,685 yards and 26 touchdowns with six interceptions. His 85.4 QBR is the fourth-highest in the nation.
Freshman phenom receiver Jeremiah Smith may have been left off as a Biletnikoff Award finalist, but he is still as dangerous as anyone on that list. Smith has 52 receptions for 899 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 17.3 yards per reception.
Senior receiver Emeka Egbuka has tallied 56 receptions for 692 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 12.4 yards per reception. Egbuka has a score in three of his last four games.
Sophomore Carnell Tate has gained traction, tallying 35 receptions for 525 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 15 yards per reception.
The Buckeyes tout a two-headed attack at running back with junior Quinshon Judkins and senior TreVeyon Henderson. Judkins has 135 carries for 759 yards and eight touchdowns while Henderson has racked up 98 carries for 730 yards and six touchdowns.
This is a major matchup for Ohio State’s offensive line, which has been revamped and reshuffled multiple times this season, including the season-ending losses of left tackle Josh Simmons and center Seth McLaughlin. They have allowed 13 sacks, which is tied for 20th in the nation.
Ohio State leads the nation in scoring defense (10.73) and yards allowed (241.7).
The unit is spearheaded by the senior defensive end duo of JT Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer. Tuimoloau has 18 solo tackles and six sacks with one forced fumble. Sawyer has 18 solo tackles with 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.
Sophomore safety Caleb Downs is a finalist for two national awards, which include the Thorpe Award (best defensive back) and Bednarik Award (best defender). He has 29 solo tackles and three pass deflections.
The scenario is simple: If Ohio State beats Michigan, they punch their ticket for a rematch against Oregon for the Big Ten Championship, and likely No. 1 overall seed in the College Football Playoffs.
If they lose, they will need both Indiana and Penn State to lose. If the Nittany Lions win and Ohio State loses, they would take the spot.
The Hoosiers would need to win and a loss from both Ohio State and Penn State.

Michigan’s hopes of following up a national championship went up in smoke under first year-head coach Sherrone Moore. They lost their head coach, defensive coordinator, starting quarterback, all five starting offensive lineman and star running back.
The next best thing would be to take a four-year stranglehold on one of college football’s fiercest rivalries. A loss could possibly keep Ohio State out of the conference finale for a fourth consecutive year, salvaging a season of frustration for the Wolverines (6-5, 4-4).
The Maize and Blue are coming off a dominating 50-6 performance against the Northwestern Wildcats. But have struggled with an offensive identity this season.
Michigan averages 23.1 points per game, which is 107th nationally. They are putting up just 299.7 yards per game, which is 128th in the nation and ahead of only Florida State and Northwestern in the Power Four. The Wolverines have always been about physicality over finesse and high-powered scoring, but the lack of production is jarring.
Senior running back Kalel Mullings is the key. Despite ranking 70th nationally in rushing yards per game (159.6), Michigan’s ground game can pummel the opposition with repetitive blows, and it starts with Mullings.
He has 153 carries for 832 yards and 11 touchdowns. Running back Donovan Edwards has weathered a sluggish senior campaign, tallying 124 carries for 578 yards and four touchdowns.
Michigan battered the Wildcats last week for 201 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.
If the running game isn’t revving under former OSU running backs coach Tony Alford, the Wolverines could be in serious trouble. Their passing game has been inept, featuring a carousel of quarterbacks who have failed to live up the role under center.
Senior quarterback Davis Warren has found his way back into the starting role. He has 1,064 yards and six touchdowns with seven interceptions. Even in the rout over Northwestern, he threw for just 195 yards.
The Wolverines are ranked 128th in the nation in passing yards per game, averaging 140.1. They are tied for 132nd in passing yards per attempt with 5.6.
Junior tight end Colston Loveland has been the lone beacon of light in the aerial game. He touts 56 receptions for 582 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 10.4 yards per reception. Loveland is the only Wolverine over 234 receiving yards. He is questionable with an undisclosed injury.
Ohio State will have its hands full with junior defensive linemen Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant, who have 6.5 sacks and 37 solo tackles between them. Josiah Stewart is a wrecking ball senior defensive end who is tied for second in the Big Ten with 8.5 sacks, 21 solo tackles and two forced fumbles.
Junior defensive back Will Johnson is doubtful with a foot injury. He has notched two interceptions and 12 solo tackles this season.
After a grueling 371-day wait, the latest chapter of Ohio State vs. Michigan will be carved out in Columbus on Senior Day. The Wolverines lead the all-time series, 61-52-6.
