Imagine what it would be like to make money simply through following your passion?

Approximately one-third of freelancers today in the U.S. say that they started their hustles out of a desire to pursue and work in their interests and passion, according to a recent survey of more than 1,100 freelancers conducted by MBO Partners.

Indeed, following one’s passion and hobbies is what leads to many professionals forging unique and successful career paths and business ventures, even making as much as $100,000 or more annually.

Take for example Lisa Steele of Fresh Eggs Daily, who started her blog out of her passion for raising chickens, little realizing that this would snowball into partnerships and sponsorships, cookbooks, a TV show, and more freelance writing opportunities. Steele previously worked on Wall Street, then owned a bookstore. Now, she says, “what started as a hobby earned me $100,000+ my third year and over $1 million by my 10th year.”

Which Hobbies Make The Most Money?

There is no definite answer to which hobbies make the most money because the result honestly depends on what you do with them, how creatively you think, and the multiple income streams you generate from one hobby. You can take one passion and diversify so you have unlimited income through multiple passive income streams.

That being said, it can be easier to make money through some hobbies more than others, granted there is sufficient demand in the market for what you have to offer.

3 Hobbies To Make Money Online In 2024

When you launch a side hustle or start full-time freelancing, it is always helpful to go after your hobby as you’ve likely already built extensive experience and knowledge surrounding it, meaning that’s one less thing to worry about when launching your business. You won’t need to prove much credibility as you probably have been doing it for a while (although in an unprofessional capacity).

Here are three hobbies to make money from home:

1. Cooking

The love of food is universal. Regardless of one’s background, profession, or other protected class, everyone enjoys eating and looking at food. Here are some ideas for you to make money from your love for all things culinary:

  • Start a home-based catering service for events; try specializing for specific dietary needs to stand out
  • If you have a knack for baking, sell baked treats such as homemade cookies, muffins, cakes, and other specialities
  • Teach cooking classes online via platforms such as Airbnb Experiences
  • Start a food blog and monetize with affiliate links, sponsorships, and even selling cookbooks and guides
  • Start a YouTube channel vlogging about all things food

2. DIY

Just like food, DIY is a topic that almost everyone encounters at some point in their lives, whether they like it or not. If you’re into DIY, why not help others figure out “how to” do anything you have extensive knowledge in?

You can make money by showing people “how-to’s” on practically any niche. From how-to gardening tutorials, to how-to for interior design ideas or for repairing a seam in one’s clothes, there are endless ideas to inspire you, which you can explore and leverage to make money. For example, you can:

  • Sell DIY kits on Etsy
  • Sell handcrafted items such as handcrafted jewellery on Etsy and similar e-commerce platforms
  • Create DIY courses on places such as Udemy or Skillshare
  • Launching a blog and monetizing it through ads and affiliate marketing

3. Gardening

Finally, if you consider yourself a garden enthusiast, one straightforward way to make money is of course, selling homegrown plants and flowers. However, other ways that you can maximize your chances of a lucrative income through your gardening skills, include:

  • Hosting gardening workshops online and/or in-person
  • Creating a gardening blog (just like with cooking and DIY)
  • Providing freelance gardening services for garden and lawn maintenance (this requires you to step out of your home a bit, however)
  • Creating unique value-added products as gifts or gourmet items, such as jams or herb-infused oils, from your garden produce

Don’t limit yourself to gardening, cooking, or DIY, however. If getting your hands dirty isn’t your thing, simply experiment with another hobby and see how many ways you can monetize it. You might just surprise yourself—and create an entirely new and exciting career adventure that you could have only dreamed of.
