Having optimum pleasure in sex definitely holds much importance in maintaining one’s sexual health. Speaking of which, there are multiple ways of controlling an orgasm, or cumming, or ejaculation, or even premature ejaculation; which include the following options:

1. Oral Medicines

Medications for delaying ejaculation might be primarily selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) in nature. The major generic medication of this type is Dapoxetine

There is another category one may explore under this option, which is ‘Chinese Herbal Medicines’. A weekly or daily dose of Chinese herbal medicines like Yimusake tablets or Qilin pills might be helpful against the symptoms of premature ejaculation. These medicines are supposed to boost sexual stamina and improve energy.

A 2017 study said that different types of Chinese herbal medicine can increase ejaculation time by about 2 minutes. However, it might cause a few minor side effects like stomach pain or dizziness, etc. So, it is better to talk with a healthcare professional before adding these into the regular diet.

2. Topical or External Application Products

a. Premature ejaculation wipes

They work by reducing sensation at the tip of the penis. These wipes contain benzocaine, a topical anesthetic that is known to block the sodium channels that cause a sensation in the penis.

A 2017 study confirmed that participants who used these wipes for at least 2 months experienced less distress related to intercourse. The majority of participants also ejaculated well after the 2-minute time period that’s typical of premature ejaculation. The participants also confirmed that the wipes were well tolerated with no heavy side effects.

But it is always best to talk to a doctor before trying these benzocaine wipes, as topical anesthetics can cause more serious side effects in certain individuals.

b. Topical creams

Many over-the-counter topical anesthetic creams contain a numbing agent that can treat premature ejaculation by reducing sensation and delaying climax. These can be applied to a penis, about 10 to 15 minutes before sex for the most effect.

A 2017 review found that topical creams helped to increase the time it took to ejaculate by a few minutes. Although generally well-tolerated, anesthetic creams can cause:

  • mild pain
  • mild burning sensation
  • decreased libido
  • a temporary loss of sensitivity

Hence, it is always advisable to talk to a doctor about the right topical cream for such a sensitive area.

c. Lidocaine spray

Just like topical creams, a lidocaine spray can help in prohibiting premature ejaculation by desensitizing the penis and decreasing hypersensitivity. Such sprays should be tried about 15 minutes before sex for the best possible results.

Some potential side effects of such a spray may include temporary sensitivity loss and some difficulty maintaining an erection before intercourse.

d. ‘Climax control’ Condoms

In general, condoms can decrease sensitivity and hold back anyone from ejaculating early. Further, there are also climax control condoms available over the counter that are either made of a thicker latex material or contain a numbing agent meant to delay the orgasm or climax

3. Dietary Changes and Adding Supplements

Zinc is an essential micronutrient that not only offers immunity and cell growth but may also help in generating more testosterone, which in some cases may help with premature ejaculation. About 220 mg of zinc sulfate, twice a day, over 1 to 4 months, is ideally recommended for men with lower testosterone. It is one of the easiest and most natural ways of getting the right level of testosterone.

Apart from zinc one should also incorporate foods rich in another micronutrient, which is magnesium, that may also help to increase the time it takes to reach the climax. Try to add food items like the ones mentioned below:

  • oysters
  • pumpkin seeds
  • soybeans
  • yogurt
  • spinach
  • wheat germ cereal
  • almonds
  • kidney beans
  • chickpeas
  • sesame seeds
  • beef and lamb
  • dark chocolate
  • garlic
  • peas

4. Ayurvedic Herbal Medicines

Ayurveda is India’s traditional healing system. It relies on thousands of herbs to treat everything from diabetes to inflammation. Certain Ayurvedic medicines, like kaunch beej, are thought to treat premature ejaculation when taken in capsule form twice daily with lukewarm water. Ayurvedic medicine has also been used in an effort to treat erectile dysfunction.

A 2017 study found that men who used Ayurvedic medicine saw a slight increase in the time it took to ejaculate during sex. However, the potential side effects are:

  • stomach pain
  • dizziness
  • mild pain
  • decreased libido

This is why it is advisable to talk with a healthcare professional before adding any extra herbs or supplements to the regular diet, as they may interact adversely with other pre-existing medications.

5. The Start-stop Technique

Men may try the start-stop method of simply stopping and stroking or stimulating and then starting all over again after a break of a few seconds. This is nothing but teasing and extending the time of reaching the peak of sexual pleasure instead of immediately giving in to experiencing the orgasm.

6. Squeeze Technique

Depending on his level of sensitivity, a man may try the squeeze technique in addition to the start-stop method which may delay the orgasm bit longer than a few seconds. This particular technique involves stopping stimulation and squeezing the head of the penis for about 30 seconds, and then again starting from the beginning. It may take some practice to be able to control orgasms. One may try to start with holding up to 30 seconds, and then gradually increase the period as one masters edging.

7. Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercises

It involves Kegel exercises and is designed to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. As one slows or stops stimulation just before reaching orgasm, he may try doing some form of Kegels.

8. Abstinence

Abstain from intercourse for some time. Rather, focus on other types of sexual activities. Penetration is not the only option for sexual satisfaction. Indulge in foreplay and other ways that allow you and your partner to feel a considerable amount of sexual pleasure.
